Event Description:

US VS. THEM: The Failure of Globalism

Monday, June 4, 5.30 - 6.45 pm

NYU Cantor Film Center, 36 East 8th Street

If you think the populist uprising against globalism has peaked, Ian Bremmer has news for you...In recent years, the political establishments in country after country have faced extraordinary pressure from a wave of popular anger against governments that have failed to protect citizens from profoundly disruptive changes. The election of President Trump and the Brexit vote made visible the rise of a new wave of populism. But is this only the beginning?

In US VS. THEM: The Failure of Globalism, Ian Bremmer unveils what’s next in a world defined by political unrest and unpredictability. Bremmer has built his career on assessing global risk and explaining political trends. Now, he explores the downsides of globalism, the struggle between the insider and the outsider, between governments and citizens, and the fear that has generated drastic geopolitical shifts. In a world increasingly divided by political, economic, cultural, and technological changes, US VS. THEM is about the coming conflict between the citizen and the state.

Join Ian Bremmer in conversation with Guardian columnist and author Richard Wolffe to discuss the battle between globalism and nationalism, the rise of the global middle class and the impact of increased access to communication technologies in the developing world, and how our social contracts might be re-imagined in partnership with citizens, governments, and the private sector.

IAN BREMMER is President and Founder of Eurasia Group and GZERO Media, Editor-at-Large and Global Affairs Columnist for TIME and was recently named LinkedIn’s Top Influencer of 2017. He is the author of nine books, including the national bestsellers The End of the Free Market and Every Nation for Itself. Bremmer has been featured on CBS “This Morning,” MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Fox News, CNN, and in TIME, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal

RICHARD WOLFFE is an author, journalist, and digital media executive, with extensive experience covering politics and foreign policy across multiple platforms. He writes a twice-weekly column for The Guardian. He is the author of several books about the Obama campaigns and presidency, including Renegade: The Making of a President, and The Message: The Re-selling of President Obama. His forthcoming book will examine the relief efforts in Puerto Rico following Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
