CALA Documentary Flim Screening of A WAY OUT
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Made by CALA faculty member Gladys Bensimon,  A Way Out is a feature documentary that premiered at the NJ International Film Festival and is about poverty and how we in America may overcome it. The film analyzes the factors of success through the stories of three minority men from Newark, New Jersey. These men successfully beat the odds...not by luck, but rather by deliberate support and opportunities that otherwise would have left them poor, incarcerated, or even dead.

In addition to the illustrative and compelling stories, the documentary features the historic, economic and academic analysis of poverty, and the history of racism and inequality in the United States, featuring various social, political, and economic experts. This documentary was passionately endorsed by Senator Cory Booker in June 2017. RSVP at http://tinyurl.com/CALAWAYOUT

‚ÄčFueling our Future -- Frugal Innovation: Co-building a Sustainable World with Fewer Resources

Thursday October 12, 6.30 - 7.45 pm

Innovation is a key driver of growth for firms and nations worldwide. But we can no longer rely on the “more for more” innovation formula—costly R&D, resource-intensive and polluting supply chains—that has sustained growth in the West for decades. Resource scarcity, climate change, new technologies, and empowered customers/citizens are compelling businesses and governments to learn to “do better with less.” Frugal innovation is a radically new paradigm that enables companies to generate greater social and economic value using fewer resources. Entrepreneurs in emerging markets such as Africa, China, and India are using frugal innovation to leapfrog the West in education, finance, energy, and healthcare—launching ultra-affordable solar panels, energy efficient medical devices, and schools-in-a-box. And now, Western nations are embracing frugal innovation to serve thrifty, socially conscious, and eco-responsible citizens at home.

Join Vijay Vaitheeswaran of The Economist in conversation with Navi Radjou, author of Conscious Society (2018), and business leaders for a discussion on how the private, public, and nonprofit sectors could join forces and adopt frugal principles and techniques to co-build sustainable societies and overcome the challenge of climate change. 7th  Annual Translation Studies Research Symposium on Complexity and Translation: Friday, October 20, 2017 10:00AM-3:30PM

Since its first session was convened in 2007, the Nida School of Translation Studies has sought to advance research in translation through active collaboration with scholars from around the globe, bringing together diverse perspectives and methodologies, challenging traditional disciplinary boundaries, and encouraging original thinking about what translation is and where it takes place in a globalized world. As part of this effort, each fall since 2011, NSTS has held a high-level research symposium in New York City, a creative event that brings into dialogue varied perspectives on an established theme. Since 2015, the Center for Applied Liberal Arts at NYU’s School of Professional Studies has joined forces with NSTS and the San Pellegrino Foundation (Italy) to carry forward this tradition of a one-day translation-oriented research event. This year’s symposium on Friday, October 20 will focus on the theory of complexity, as we explore together the lessons and implications for Translation Studies that can be drawn from this dynamic field.

2nd Annual Translation Day Symposium on Technologies in Translation: Saturday, October 21, 2017 10:00AM-4:00PM

From mobile apps to CAT tools, machine translation and data management systems, the way in which translators and interpreters work has gone through significant transformation in recent years. How has this affected our profession and how do we prepare ourselves for the rapidly changing technologies in the future? How will these new technologies change the profile of the translator? In celebrating the 6th year of the NYUSPS MS in Translation, and as part of a twin conference with the Nida School of Translation Studies, NYUSPS Center for Applied Liberal Arts presents the 2nd Annual Translation Day Symposium on Saturday, October 21, 2017. This one-day event invites colleagues, students, and friends to converge and discuss issues around technologies and new media in translation and interpreting, while we reflect upon the state of the language profession and where it's headed.
