Fueling our Future: The Geopolitics and Economics of Energy in the 21st Century

China and India: Managing the domestic energy boom

Tuesday, April 4, 6.30 – 7.45 pm

The International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts that India will become the engine of global growth in oil demand by the mid-2020s as its economy grows and its population becomes the biggest in the world. China is already a big consumer, taking the number 2 spot behind the United States in global oil demand. Over the past decade, it has accounted for 60% of the world’s growth in oil consumption. China and India are not only consuming more oil but also are big players in the natural gas and nuclear energy markets. China is also now the world’s lead investor in renewable energy. While both countries focus on meeting domestic energy demand, they struggle with increasingly dangerous levels of pollution. This panel will examine the geopolitics of China and India’s energy choices and challenges, and how the two largest populations in the world will manage demand for energy and environmental health.
