NYU/NSTS Translation Conference
10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

8th Annual NSTS Research Symposium: Translation and Publishing on Friday, September 28, 2018 from 10:00AM to 4:00PM

Since its first session was convened in 2007, the Nida School of Translation Studies has sought to advance research in translation through active collaboration with scholars from around the globe, bringing together varying perspectives and methodologies, challenging traditional disciplinary boundaries, and encouraging original thinking about what translation is and where it takes place in a globalized world. As part of this effort, each fall since 2011, NSTS has held a high-level research symposium in New York City, a creative event that brings into dialogue varied perspectives on an established theme. Since 2015, the Center for Applied Liberal Arts at NYU’s School of Professional Studies has joined forces with NSTS and the San Pellegrino Foundation (Italy) to carry forward this tradition of a one-day translation-oriented research event. This year’s symposium will engage ongoing discussions around translation, materiality and publishing, drawing together theoretical and practical perspectives on both print and digital formats and the many movements in between.

NYU Translation Symposium: Why is Publishing Translations More Important Now Than Ever? on Saturday, September 29, 2018 from 9:30AM to 4:30PM

The objective of this symposium is to answer the question: "why is publishing translations more important now than ever?" and to look at publishing translations from a broad interdisciplinary perspective. The keynote will focus on the global politics and economics of translation. Panelists will discuss the importance of publishing translated work, consider the many venues and opportunities for publishing translations, and offer ideas to rising translators for including published work in their portfolios. Industry experts from trade publishing, university presses, literary journals, and online publishers will address the topic from their professional perspectives. This one day event invites guest speakers, students and colleagues to engage in discussion and to explore opportunities in this growing field.
