| 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM | Conflict, Security & Development: Towards a Peacebuilding Continuum Towards a Peacebuilding Continuum:
Peace, Development, and Reconciliation
Graeme Simpson, senior adviser to director general, Interpeace
The field of transitional justice has evolved rapidly, as different approaches to reconciliation and peace-building have been explored. This evolution coincides with emerging practices in development addressing the underlying social, political, and economic conditions that may contribute to conflict. Drawing on his experience across these fields, Simpson questions emerging assumptions about the relationship between peace-building and state-building, as well as the role of development assistance in helping societies transition from conflict to peace. He particularly challenges the notion that peace-building can be viewed as a linear process and reflects on whether development strategies run the risk of spawning fresh conflict.
