| 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM | McGhee Honorees Present at Third Annual Sideris Symposium
The reader’s role in Louis Borges’ “Ficciones,” a tipping point battle in the Ottoman Empire’s decline, and a case for ignoring climate change as an international crime will all converge at the third annual George Sideris Honors and Scholars Symposium on March 24. The event starts 6:00 pm and lasts until 8:30 pm at The Torch Club, 18 Waverly Place. A reception will follow the lectures.
Registration is required.
The Symposium highlights the achievements of Paul McGhee Division students who have excelled in their fields and have received scholarships, awards, or honors as a result. This year’s honorees and their presentations are as follows:
• Gerard Savaresse (B.A. in Humanities, Concentation in Literature) will present "Algebra and Fire: The Reader in Borges' Ficciones."
• Naomi Hartman (B.A. in Social Sciences, Concentration in International Studies) will speak on the topic "Is Ignoring Climate Change an International Crime?: Connecting International Environmental Law, Human Rights and Governmental Inaction."
• Vanja “Sandy” Glusica (B.A. in Social Sciences, Concentration in History) will address "Finality or Continuum: The Battle of Lepanto (1571) and Its Role in Ottoman Decline."
The event is named in honor of Dr. George Sideris, one of McGhee’s most outstanding and dedicated professors, who through his own personal initiative organized seminars for students to present their work during the 1990’s and the early 2000’s. Dr. Sideris taught at McGhee from 1980 until his passing in 2007. |
| 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM | Egyptian Author and Activist Dr. Nawal El Saadawi Reads Selected Works
Dr. Nawal El Saadawi, the renowned Egyptian human rights activist and author, will read selected passages from her numerous books, which will be followed by a signing.
This event will take place at the NYU Bookstore, 726 Broadway. The NYU Bookstore will be offering 20 percent discounts on Dr. El Saadawi’s books during the week of her events.
REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED
The reading is open to the public on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Dr. El Saadawi is the author of over 40 fiction and non-fiction books. Her novels God Dies by the Nile and Women at Point have been banned in many Arab countries. She has been outspoken against female genital mutilation, and her writings on the topic led to her dismissal from the Egyptian Ministry of Health in the early 1970s. Later imprisoned by President Anwar Sadat for "crimes against the state," she authored Memoirs from the Women's Prison during her incarceration, using only toilet paper and a smuggled eyebrow pencil to write the manuscript.
On Tuesday, March 22, Dr. El Saadawi will also lecture on “Creativity, Dissidence and Women: A Multidisciplinary Conference,” which will be followed by a panel discussion on the revolution in Egypt.
These events are sponsored by the School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) and The New York Literary Club at McGhee. The co-sponsorship is provided by the Paul McGhee Division, the SCPS Undergraduate Student Council, and the NYU Bookstore. |
