Event Description:
In our increasingly fractured world, multiple perspectives are more important than ever, and women’s views of our existence must reach more screens. The CALA Spring 2017 Foreign Film Series: A View from a Broad features the works of six international female filmmakers, ranging from Iciar Bollain’s Flores De Otro Mundo (Flowers from Another World, 1999), about three single women searching for love in the patriarchal society of rural Spain to Huang Shuqin’s 人鬼情 (Woman Demon Human, 1987) about a young actress in China who, as she becomes more famous, demands to play traditional “male” roles. The series also includes Margareth von Trotta’s Hannah Arendt (2012), a portrait of the political theorist and influential thinker during her controversial coverage of Nazi officer Adolf Eichmann’s war crimes trial at Nuremberg for The New Yorker. Pam Katz, who wrote the screenplay, will present the film. All of the films are introduced by NYU faculty and are shown at various venues, including NYU Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò and Scandinavia House.
