7:00 PM - 8:30 PM You Are What You Speak: Grammar Grouches, Language Laws, and the Politics of Identity
A book discussion with author and Economist language blogger Robert Lane Greene and Clyde Haberman, New York City columnist, The New York Times

Modern nations have tried to build national languages capable of being a vehicle for a proper nation's greatness; we see this in the division of Hindi-Urdu, the breakup of Yugoslavia, the rebirth of Hebrew, and the reinvention of Turkish. The motive for these efforts is the belief that language and national identity are inexorably linked: "France has French and Spain has Spanish and England has English; to join those ranks means we need a fully-fledged and universal modern, national language too".

Join New York Times columnist Clyde Haberman for a conversation with author Robert Lane Greene, on our assumptions about language and national identity – and what these imply about class, race, culture, and national values in America as well as around the world.
