12:30 PM - 1:30 PM Conflict, Security, and Development: Accountability to Beneficiaries of Humanitarian Aid
This brown-bag lunch series is a collaboration with the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice at the NYU School of Law, the Office for International Programs at the NYU Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, and the NYU Master’s Program in Public Health. It examines new research, creative policy approaches, and recent innovations in addressing security and development challenges in conflict and post-conflict contexts.

Accountability to Beneficiaries of Humanitarian Aid: What is It and How Can It Be Measured?

Mark Foran, Attending Emergency Physician, Bellevue Hospital Center and NYU Langone Medical Center; Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine, NYU School of Medicine

People affected by conflict and disaster have little to no voice in the relief process. Recently, there has been a call for increased accountability to beneficiaries of humanitarian aid.  This effort reflects a rights-based approach to humanitarian relief, wherein affected communities participate in the relief process and have a fundamental right to aid that sustains a basic level of human dignity. There are currently few established quantitative methods to measure accountability toward the beneficiaries of aid. Foran will discuss indicators that could be used to evaluate and characterize accountability across diverse environments and circumstances, and increase the effectiveness of aid, thereby improving and saving lives.

Pre-registration is required.
