CALA FALL 2017 FILM SERIES: FLYING DOWN TO RIO (1933)-Introduction: Patricia Dillon
6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

NYU Event Space

LIGHTS, CAMERA, DECO!: A Cinematic Celebration of Art Deco's International Influence. In conjunction with the Art Deco Society of New York. The Art Deco style arguably originated at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels in Paris in 1925, where it left  a mark on many designers including Cedric Gibbons, art director for the film Grand Hotel. The Art Deco style would appear in over 1500 films—from Metropolis to The Artist—across the following decades. Art Deco was a truly international style, influencing architecture, fashion, and the design of all objects from perfume bottles to cars. Art Deco moved away from the floral, ornamental patterns of the past to the streamlined, modern shapes of the future. At the same time it embraced and exoticized design motifs from Asia, South America, Egypt, and Africa. Art Deco’s clean and geometric lines complemented the black and white movies of the era and created enduring iconic cinematic images. Please join SPS’s Center for Applied Liberal Arts in collaboration with the Art Deco Society of New York this Fall in celebrating Art Deco’s impact on cinema around the world. RSVP at

Global Leaders: H.E. Archbishop Bernardito Cleopas Auza, Mission of the Holy See to the UN
6:30 PM - 7:45 PM

Global Leaders: Conversations with Alon Ben-Meir H.E. Archbishop Bernardito Cleopas Auza, Apostolic Nuncio and Permanent Observer, Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations, and Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the Organization of American States

Monday, February 27, 6.30 – 7.45 pm

Join Professor Ben-Meir in conversation with His Excellency Bernardito C. Auza on the role religion is playing in conflicts in the Middle East, as well as the impact of the refugee crisis on the region and in Europe. How is the Vatican and Pope Francis addressing these crises, and how might the Holy See use its diplomatic outreach to serve as a key interlocutor in global conflict resolution?

His Excellency Bernardito C. Auza was born in Talibon, Republic of the Philippines on 10 June 1959. He became an ordained priest for the Diocese of Tagbilaran on 29 June 1985; in 1986 he was incardinated to the newly created Diocese of Talibon. After earning a doctorate in Theology, he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1990 and served at the Apostolic Nunciature in Madagascar, in Bulgaria, and then in Albania. He then served in the Secretariat of State in the Vatican and from there was appointed to the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations in New York. He was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti on 8 May 2008 and was ordained Titular Archbishop of Suacia on 3 July 2008. On 1 July 2014, he was appointed Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations in New York, and as Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the Organization of American States on 16 July 2014.
