| 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM | Conflict, Security & Development: Advocacy and the Internally Displaced Advocacy and the Internally Displaced: Lessons from the IDP Network in Kenya
Jacqueline Klopp, associate research scholar, Center for Sustainable Urban Development Earth Institute, Columbia University
Drawing from experience in Kenya, this talk explores some of the political dynamics of violence-induced displacement in the country and argues this is critical to understanding the situation of the displaced, especially after the humanitarian phase ends. These dynamics also help better explain the complexities of advocating with and on behalf of the internally displaced in protracted situations of distress. Finally, Klopp presents a novel approach to IDP advocacy that is being attempted by a small Kenyan NGO called the Internal Displacement Policy and Advocacy Center, the National IDP Network in Kenya, and the human rights organization, Article 19.
