| 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM | Special Event: Impact of the Yugoslav and Rwanda Tribunals Impact of the Yugoslav and Rwanda Tribunals:
Lessons for the International Criminal Court
The International Criminal Tribunals for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia have decisively contributed to the development of international justice and, to varying extents, to national institutions dealing with war crimes in the countries under their jurisdiction. At the same time, the common challenges of geographic distance from the countries where the crimes occurred and prosecuting high-profile cases of mass atrocities with large numbers of victims and perpetrators, have significantly shaped the extent to which the tribunals have delivered on their mandates. Panelists will explore the impact of the two ad-hoc Tribunals in the affected communities and possible lessons to be drawn by the International Criminal Court.
Panelists to include:
Richard Goldstone, former chief prosecutor, International Criminal Tribunals for Rwanda and for the former Yugoslavia
Hassan Jallow, prosecutor, International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda
Diane Orentlicher, professor of International Law, American University; former deputy for War Crimes Issues, U.S. Department of State
David Tolbert, president, International Center for Transitional Justice; former deputy prosecutor,
International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)
Moderator:
Jennifer Trahan, clinical assistant professor, Center for Global Affairs, NYU-SCPS
