6:00 PM - 9:00 PM CALA FALL 2017 FILM SERIES: METROPOLIS (1927) -Introduction: Francis Morrone
LIGHTS, CAMERA, DECO!: A Cinematic Celebration of Art Deco's International Influence. In conjunction with the Art Deco Society of New York. The Art Deco style arguably originated at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels in Paris in 1925, where it left  a mark on many designers including Cedric Gibbons, art director for the film Grand Hotel. The Art Deco style would appear in over 1500 films—from Metropolis to The Artist—across the following decades. Art Deco was a truly international style, influencing architecture, fashion, and the design of all objects from perfume bottles to cars. Art Deco moved away from the floral, ornamental patterns of the past to the streamlined, modern shapes of the future. At the same time it embraced and exoticized design motifs from Asia, South America, Egypt, and Africa. Art Deco’s clean and geometric lines complemented the black and white movies of the era and created enduring iconic cinematic images. Please join SPS’s Center for Applied Liberal Arts in collaboration with the Art Deco Society of New York this Fall in celebrating Art Deco’s impact on cinema around the world. 6:30 PM - 7:45 PM North Korea and the Nuclear Deterrence Challenge

North Korea and the Nuclear Deterrence Challenge

Monday, November 20, 6.30 - 7.45 pm

Today the international community faces a convergence of geopolitical competition and nuclear threats unseen since the end of the Cold War. The imbroglio over a nuclear armed and very dangerous North Korea involving the United States, China and other actors epitomizes this peril. How does the North Korean situation differ from the case of Iran, and why has the international community found so little success in preventing proliferation there? As the world accustoms itself to a nuclear North Korea, what multilateral responses might be appropriate to assure stability and prevent any regional or global nuclear conflicts?  Join our panel moderated by Clinical Associate Professor WPS Sidhu to discuss these developments and how they might play out. Interactive Session with Global Social Entrepreneurs, Impact Investors, and Development Practitioners

Presented by the NYU/SPS Center for Global Affairs Private Sector (Global Economy) Concentration and Franklin Street Policy Group

Wednesday, December 6th, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

You might have the fix to end world hunger, but if you haven't figured out how to pay your bills, no one will ever hear about it.

How do you build a business model that is able to achieve the trifecta of global social impact, financial viability, and growth?

What are the key strategies to advance societal benefit and generate income from business activities?

How do socially-driven enterprises access capital, manage investor expectations, and make tough budget choices while keeping firmly “on mission”?

Join a panel of social entrepreneurs, impact investors, and development practitioners as they share their difficult lessons-learned on their journey to financial sustainability while driving social impact.

Following a moderated panel and Q&A, join panelists in breakout groups to exchange one-on-one questions and perspectives. Network with other entrepreneurs, impact practitioners, and members of the CGA community with refreshments at the end of the program.

Opening remarks by Peter Marber, Clinical Associate Professor, NYU/SPS Center for Global Affairs. Peter has been a thought leader and pioneering investor in the global markets since the late 1980s. An award-winning money manager for some of the world’s largest institutions, Peter also teaches at Johns Hopkins and has been on the faculty of Harvard and Columbia. His newest book is The Evolution of Liberal Arts in the Global Age.

Moderated by Miki S. Noguchi. Miki advises entrepreneurs and organizations to think creatively about socially responsible policies that promote economic growth, stability, and impact. Miki cofounded and leads strategy and partnerships at Franklin Street Policy Group, a social venture that convenes, connects, and advises impact leaders across sectors to develop solutions without borders.
