CALA FALL 2017 FILM SERIES: FLYING DOWN TO RIO (1933)-Introduction: Patricia Dillon
6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

NYU Event Space

LIGHTS, CAMERA, DECO!: A Cinematic Celebration of Art Deco's International Influence. In conjunction with the Art Deco Society of New York. The Art Deco style arguably originated at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels in Paris in 1925, where it left  a mark on many designers including Cedric Gibbons, art director for the film Grand Hotel. The Art Deco style would appear in over 1500 films—from Metropolis to The Artist—across the following decades. Art Deco was a truly international style, influencing architecture, fashion, and the design of all objects from perfume bottles to cars. Art Deco moved away from the floral, ornamental patterns of the past to the streamlined, modern shapes of the future. At the same time it embraced and exoticized design motifs from Asia, South America, Egypt, and Africa. Art Deco’s clean and geometric lines complemented the black and white movies of the era and created enduring iconic cinematic images. Please join SPS’s Center for Applied Liberal Arts in collaboration with the Art Deco Society of New York this Fall in celebrating Art Deco’s impact on cinema around the world. NEWSMAKERS: The Rise of ISIS

Today, journalists covering global issues straddle a fine line. Are they simply reporting news as it happens or does their work actually affect the stories they cover? How has this dynamic changed as more journalists turn to non-traditional and new media to both source and to spread their stories? Join Alexis Gelber, a long-time, top editor at Newsweek, in conversation with today’s new global journalists who use print, social, and alternative media inventively to change how global stories are covered, and to sometimes affect their outcomes.

Raney Aronson, Deputy Executive Producer, Frontline
Martin Smith, Producer, Frontline

What went wrong in Iraq? FRONTLINE Correspondent Martin Smith has investigated the miscalculations and mistakes that have led to the rise of The Islamic State (ISIS), and what it means for the United States. Join him and Raney Aronson to discuss the making of the October 28, 2014 FRONTLINE broadcast and its implications for U.S. policy in Iraq and the region. Realistically, what can be done to defeat ISIS, and can Iraq's Sunnis, Shias and Kurds ever peacefully coexist in a stable and democratic Iraqi nation?

Seating is available on a first come first serve basis until we reach capacity. Preregistration does not guarantee entry.
