LIGHTS, CAMERA, DECO!: A Cinematic Celebration of Art Deco's International Influence. In conjunction with the Art Deco Society of New York. The Art Deco style arguably originated at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels in Paris in 1925, where it left  a mark on many designers including Cedric Gibbons, art director for the film Grand Hotel. The Art Deco style would appear in over 1500 films—from Metropolis to The Artist—across the following decades. Art Deco was a truly international style, influencing architecture, fashion, and the design of all objects from perfume bottles to cars. Art Deco moved away from the floral, ornamental patterns of the past to the streamlined, modern shapes of the future. At the same time it embraced and exoticized design motifs from Asia, South America, Egypt, and Africa. Art Deco’s clean and geometric lines complemented the black and white movies of the era and created enduring iconic cinematic images. Please join SPS’s Center for Applied Liberal Arts in collaboration with the Art Deco Society of New York this Fall in celebrating Art Deco’s impact on cinema around the world. Alon Ben-Meir, professor of international relations, journalist, and author, hosts leaders from around the world in conversations that probe critical global issues and explore the policies designed to address them.

H.E. Mohamed M. Tawfik, Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the United States

Mohamed Tawfik was designated as Egypt’s first Ambassador to the United State of America to be accredited after the 25 January 2011 revolution. A career diplomat whose journey started in 1983, Mohamed Tawfik also served as Egypt’s Ambassador to Lebanon, Australia and as non-resident Ambassador to New Zealand, Western Samoa, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and the Marshall Islands.

Mr. Tawfik was educated at Cairo University where he pursued a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He also holds a Masters Degree in International Organizations' Law from the Universite de Paris and a diploma in diplomatic relations from the International Institute for Public Administration in Paris. Previous assignments include Washington DC, Harare Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva. Throughout his numerous assignments, Mr. Tawfik took part in numerous bilateral, regional and multinational negotiations, international conferences and meetings in the fields of disarmament, labor, human rights, and trade. He held numerous multilateral positions such as president of the Conference on Disarmament, chairman of the Group of 77 in Geneva, and coordinator of the New Agenda Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament.

Mr. Tawfik is married to Amani Amin and they have two sons.

Registration for this event is required. Those who have not registered by 4pm the day of the event will not be allowed entry.
Seating is available on a first come first serve basis until we reach capacity. Preregistration does not guarantee entry.
