The Role of UN Sanctions in African Conflict Zones
Howard Wachtel, U.S. Mission to the UN
Over the last decade, the UN Security Council has authorized the creation of several targeted sanctions regimes throughout Africa to prevent the occurrence of atrocities and genocide. From Cote d’Ivoire and Sudan to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Libya, the Security Council has responded in different conflict zones by issuing a variety of targeted measures, such as asset freezes, arms embargoes and travel bans, that are uniquely tailored to address the nature of each conflict. This discussion focuses on the strengths and limitations of African state-based sanctions regimes, exploring how they may be used in the future.
