6:30 PM - 7:45 PM Gender in the Emerging Counter Terrorism Agenda

Gender in the Emerging Counter Terrorism Agenda

Presented in collaboration with the CGA’s Gender Working Group (GWG)

Thursday, October 19, 6. 30 - 7.45 pm

Considerable attention has been paid to gender dynamics in both the composition and ideology of radical extremist groups, as well as in the tactics and designated targets of these groups.  Frustrated masculinities are posited to be among the drivers of radicalization and decreased inhibitions to engage in extreme violence. Extremists target women and girls from apostate or opposition groups for organized, even highly bureaucratized, sexual violence and slavery, as well as for online misogyny that builds a culture of fear and inhibition amongst women. Extreme constraints on women’s rights, roles, deportment, visibility, and mobility are part of the visions of social change and ideal states used to motivate fighters.  Yet radical extremists have also been successful in recruiting women to the ranks of fighters and supporters.

How can women be effectively engaged in the counter-terrorism (CT) agenda? While it is clear that more gender-equal societies may engender fewer extremist movements, engaging women in the CT project may simply designate them as targets for more violence. Attempts to promote gender equality may themselves trigger the violent backlash reactions that become pipelines to extremist actions.  And challenging violent masculinities is a massive developmental project that stretches beyond the urgent and immediate timeline of counter-terrorism. This panel of experts discuss how human rights and gender

10:00 AM Twin Translation Conference Weekend 2017
7th  Annual Translation Studies Research Symposium on Complexity and Translation: Friday, October 20, 2017 10:00AM-3:30PM

Since its first session was convened in 2007, the Nida School of Translation Studies has sought to advance research in translation through active collaboration with scholars from around the globe, bringing together diverse perspectives and methodologies, challenging traditional disciplinary boundaries, and encouraging original thinking about what translation is and where it takes place in a globalized world. As part of this effort, each fall since 2011, NSTS has held a high-level research symposium in New York City, a creative event that brings into dialogue varied perspectives on an established theme. Since 2015, the Center for Applied Liberal Arts at NYU’s School of Professional Studies has joined forces with NSTS and the San Pellegrino Foundation (Italy) to carry forward this tradition of a one-day translation-oriented research event. This year’s symposium on Friday, October 20 will focus on the theory of complexity, as we explore together the lessons and implications for Translation Studies that can be drawn from this dynamic field.

2nd Annual Translation Day Symposium on Technologies in Translation: Saturday, October 21, 2017 10:00AM-4:00PM

From mobile apps to CAT tools, machine translation and data management systems, the way in which translators and interpreters work has gone through significant transformation in recent years. How has this affected our profession and how do we prepare ourselves for the rapidly changing technologies in the future? How will these new technologies change the profile of the translator? In celebrating the 6th year of the NYUSPS MS in Translation, and as part of a twin conference with the Nida School of Translation Studies, NYUSPS Center for Applied Liberal Arts presents the 2nd Annual Translation Day Symposium on Saturday, October 21, 2017. This one-day event invites colleagues, students, and friends to converge and discuss issues around technologies and new media in translation and interpreting, while we reflect upon the state of the language profession and where it's headed. 6:30 PM - 7:45 PM Fueling our Future: Mid East Energy and Politics

Fueling our Future: Mid East Energy and Politics

Monday, October 23, 6.30 - 7.45 pm

The last three years have proven tumultuous for energy producers in the Middle East. In 2014, OPEC elected to maintain production levels, while the US shale revolution drove prices down to new lows. OPEC’s most recent decision to work with Russia and other non-OPEC countries to curtail production has created only a minimal rebound. Most of the region’s economies continue to endure economic weakness as a result of the extended price drop, with significant implications for social and political stability. To add to these challenges, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates cut ties with Qatar in June, creating perhaps the worst diplomatic crisis to hit Gulf Arab states in decades. The embargo remains, affecting Qatar’s energy trade and raising questions about shifting regional relationships, particularly between Qatar and Iran. CGA Academic Director Carolyn Kissane will examine these issues and others in a fascinating panel discussion on the geopolitics of energy in the Middle East.

6:00 PM - 9:00 PM CALA FALL 2017 FILM SERIES: THE BLACK CAT (1934)- Introduction: Eric Myers & Howard Mandelbaum
LIGHTS, CAMERA, DECO!: A Cinematic Celebration of Art Deco's International Influence. In conjunction with the Art Deco Society of New York. The Art Deco style arguably originated at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels in Paris in 1925, where it left  a mark on many designers including Cedric Gibbons, art director for the film Grand Hotel. The Art Deco style would appear in over 1500 films—from Metropolis to The Artist—across the following decades. Art Deco was a truly international style, influencing architecture, fashion, and the design of all objects from perfume bottles to cars. Art Deco moved away from the floral, ornamental patterns of the past to the streamlined, modern shapes of the future. At the same time it embraced and exoticized design motifs from Asia, South America, Egypt, and Africa. Art Deco’s clean and geometric lines complemented the black and white movies of the era and created enduring iconic cinematic images. Please join SPS’s Center for Applied Liberal Arts in collaboration with the Art Deco Society of New York this Fall in celebrating Art Deco’s impact on cinema around the world. UNDERSTANDING THE JOHNSON AMENDMENT—THE CORNERSTONE OF PUBLIC TRUST IN THE CHARITABLE COMMUNITY

Presented by the Heyman Program in Philanthropy and Fundraising

Thursday, November 2, 6:30 – 7:45 p.m.

More than 4,900 nonprofit organizations have signed on to protest the repeal of the Johnson Amendment, a provision of the US tax code prohibits all 501.c.3 nonprofit organizations from endorsing political candidates.  In May 2017, President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order “to defend the freedom of religion and speech” for the purpose of easing the Johnson Amendment.  The National Council of Nonprofits and the Independent Sector oppose legislation to repeal the Johnson Amendment on the grounds that it protects the integrity and independence of charitable nonprofits and foundations, allowing them to carry out their missions free of partisan divisions

Join Aimee Simpierre, Editor-at-Large for New York Nonprofit Media, for a discussion about the Johnson Amendment and the national movement to maintain the amendment, which is considered essential to avoid partisanship in the nonprofit sector and permit organizations to continue to serve all in need.

6:00 PM - 9:00 PM CALA FALL 2017 FILM SERIES: METROPOLIS (1927) -Introduction: Francis Morrone
6:30 PM - 7:45 PM North Korea and the Nuclear Deterrence Challenge

North Korea and the Nuclear Deterrence Challenge

Monday, November 20, 6.30 - 7.45 pm

Today the international community faces a convergence of geopolitical competition and nuclear threats unseen since the end of the Cold War. The imbroglio over a nuclear armed and very dangerous North Korea involving the United States, China and other actors epitomizes this peril. How does the North Korean situation differ from the case of Iran, and why has the international community found so little success in preventing proliferation there? As the world accustoms itself to a nuclear North Korea, what multilateral responses might be appropriate to assure stability and prevent any regional or global nuclear conflicts?  Join our panel moderated by Clinical Associate Professor WPS Sidhu to discuss these developments and how they might play out.
