CALA Spring 2019 Film Series Presents "Crime and Punishment Around the World: Incarceration on Film"
6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Deutsches Haus

Opening reception and screening of  Sophie Scholl - Die letzten Tage (The Final Days).

For more details and to RSVP, please go to https://tinyurl.com/CALASP19FILM

The notion of crime as an illegal act that is punishable by a government authority implies a clear differentiation between right and wrong. Mass incarceration further symbolizes the concept that a physical space drawn in bars and walls can impose a simple order onto a world that defies borders and neat categories. The purpose of punishment is to avenge, to incapacitate, and to deter, but does it work? Is justice served more than it is not? And might the abuses of mass incarceration be inherent to its practice? This series of international films takes a closer look at different interpretations of crime and punishment and what they say about a country’s values, collective identities, and understanding of history.

The Power of Sport and Diplomacy
8:30 AM - 12:00 PM

NYU Event Space

In today’s global sports world, the intersection of sport and diplomacy has become an everyday phenomenon. The power of sport is wide and diverse but is greatest when it unifies citizens across cultures and communities to better understand each other; a remarkably similar outcome to that which Diplomacy endeavors to achieve. Different approaches to global sports leadership and utilization of sport as an element of soft power/public diplomacy efforts are deployed around the world by states and non-state actors like leagues, teams, companies, and individuals. But just what, exactly, does the intersection of sport and diplomacy look like? What is sport diplomacy? Who, in today’s Internet-connected, social media-influenced world, serves as de facto ambassadors each time they represent, communicate, and negotiate in and around the arena? Over the course of two roundtables and a keynote address, together some of the best minds, policy makers, athletes, administrators, journalists, practitioners and students of the global sport arena will learn and exchange about how the power of sport is used in different ways around the world, with a focus on transnational influences. While one main emphasis will be on sport’s power to serve as a unifier of communities, cultures, and citizens across national borders (i.e. sports diplomacy), other uses of sport’s power will be contemplated, such as its ability to encourage social change, generate greater gender equality, or used in a nation’s branding/influence.
